The church was built in 1405 on the foundations of a castle which once stood there.

The church of St John the Baptist, formerly a parish church, is sadly now in a state of neglect.

There were once some 15th-century frescoes inside, which can now be admired in the museum housed within Sestola Castle.

However, it is worth seeing this church even only from the outside, by climbing up the road from the hamlet of Roncoscaglia.

It is located on local trail no. 4, a circular route which leads from Sestola to Roncoscaglia and back again along a lower road.

You can enjoy a splendid panoramic view of Sestola from the area in front of the church.

The hamlet cemetery lies just behind the church.
