Location

Fanano is easily accessible by car from the motorway junctions for Valsamoggia and Modena Sud, and is just an hour’s drive from Modena and Bologna.

Why visit

Within the tourist area of Mount Cimone, most of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club) trails belong to Fanano, making it a popular destination for trekkers, e-bikers and mountain bikers.

When to go

Fanano is great to visit at any time of year, changing from season to season: spring brings an explosion of greenery; summer a whole range of things to do and see; autumn brings chestnuts, mushrooms and colourful foliage waiting to be photographed. And in winter it is home to trekking and skiing.

Not to be missed

Croce Arcana Pass: dividing Emilia Romagna from Tuscany, it is easily reached and, on clear days, offers sweeping views, as far as the islands of Elba and Capraia.
Lake Scaffaiolo: the highest lake in Emilia Romagna standing at 1,800 meters (6,500 feet), with the Duca degli Abruzzi Refuge on its shores. In winter, when the lake freezes over, the scene is even more special than usual.
